Fedde, Zuniga combine to pitch Rebels to baseball win

Erick Fedde allowed only four hits over six innings and struck out seven for his first decision of the season Friday night as the UNLV baseball team beat Pacific 9-1 in Stockton, Calif.

Brady Zuniga pitched three innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two, for his first save as the Rebels improved to 5-1.

Joey Swanner and Justin Jones, the top two batters in UNLV’s lineup, each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Brandon Bayardi had two hits.

The Rebels will meet Gonzaga (2-2) in the first game of a split doubleheader today, before playing Pacific (1-3) in the second game.

■ MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING — UNLV won one of four events and is in third place after two days of the 10-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships in Monterey Park, Calif.

The 25th-ranked Rebels have 219 points, while Wyoming jumped into the second-day lead with 230.5 points, and BYU is second with 228.

Dillon Virva had UNLV’s lone victory of the day. The freshman won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.92 seconds.

■ WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING — UNLV posted three top-eight finishes, including a relay runner-up finish, to stand in third place after two days of the nine-team Mountain West championships in San Antonio.

The Rebels have 178 points after the first eight events, while San Diego State leads with 291.5 points. UNR is second with 186.

The 400-yard medley team of Carmen Robb, Nakayla Chan, Katelyne Herrington and Rachel Dixon set a school record after touching the wall in a time of 3:36.67, good for second place.

■ MEN’S GOLF — UNLV shot a second-round 5-over-par 293 to move into a tie for sixth place in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Turtle Bay Resort’s Arnold Palmer Course in Kahuku, Hawaii.

Two-time defending champion California remained the team leader after a second-round 6-under 282. The Golden Bears have a 36-hole total of 10-under 566 and lead the field by 16 shots. BYU is second at 6-over 582 after a 2-over 290.

UNLV is tied with Colorado State at 20-over 596.

Blake Biddle and AJ McInerney paced the Rebels, standing tied for 15th at 4-over 148.

Cal’s Joel Stalter increased his individual lead to two shots with a 2-under 70 and sits at 7-under 137.

■ INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD — UNLV was in fifth place after the first day of the nine-team Mountain West championships in Nampa, Idaho.

Taylar Mills was seventh in the pentathlon to earn two points for UNLV at the three-day meet hosted by Boise State. Mills finished the event comprised of five disciplines with a total of 3,472 points. She had her best showing in the shot put with a fifth-place finish of 38 feet, one-quarter inch.

San Diego State leads with 23 points.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

Evan Van Hoosier went 4-for-4, and Morgan Stotts went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple to lead the CSN baseball team to a 9-2 victory over Salt Lake Community College in a seven-inning game at Morse Stadium.

The Coyotes (13-5) exploded for an eight-run second inning to take control, including a two-run double by Chad Whiteaker.

Joey Lauria (4-0) allowed one runs on six hits with six strikeouts in five innings to earn the victory on the mound.

Sean McCracken and Chevas Numata each went 2-for-4 for CSN.
