Rebels baseball: UNLV comes up short in ninth, lose MWC opener to Aztecs

Craig Rasmussen struck out Ryan Scott with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth inning to preserve San Diego State's 4-3 victory over UNLV in the first round of the Mountain West Conference baseball tournament Tuesday night in San Diego.

The fifth-seeded Rebels led 3-0 before the No. 4 Aztecs rallied with two runs in the sixth and two in the eighth.

UNLV loaded the bases on a walk and two Aztecs errors before Rasmussen came on and got Scott to chase a pitch out of the strike zone for the final out.

San Diego State won despite committing five errors. All three Rebels' runs were unearned.

UNLV managed just three hits off five San Diego State pitchers. Tanner Peters (9-4) allowed eight hits in eight innings for the Rebels.

The Rebels (32-24) will face No. 3 seed Brigham Young, which was upset 5-4 by New Mexico in Tuesday's first game, at 11 a.m. today in an elimination game.
