Richy’s two-hitter lifts UNLV baseball to sweep against No. 9 Stanford

John Richy threw a two-hit complete game, helping the UNLV baseball team stun No. 9 Stanford 5-1 on Sunday and sweep the three-game series at Palo Alto, Calif.

The Rebels broke away in the seventh inning, snapping a 1-1 tie with four runs. A pair of throwing errors brought in Joey Armstrong to make it 2-1. Joey Swanner followed with a two-run single, and Mark Shannon ended the surge with an RBI single.

Richy allowed two hits and no walks, with four strikeouts, facing just 30 batters while throwing 98 pitches.

UNLV (13-3) has won nine in a row, its longest streak since 2000. The Rebels cooled off the Cardinal (10-5), who entered the weekend on a nine-game win streak and hadn’t lost a home series since 2009.

■ SOFTBALL — At Long Beach, Calif., UNLV nearly gained its second upset in as many days at the Long Beach State Invitational, but No. 9 UCLA put up three runs in the seventh inning to claim a 4-3 win.

Pauline Monreal’s bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the fourth put the Rebels (8-16) ahead 3-1. But the Bruins (21-4) rallied in the seventh, paced by a two-run double from B.B. Bates.
