UNLV men’s golf finishes second in Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii

UNLV's 13th-ranked men's golf team shot a final-round 3-under-par 285 on Friday and tied for second place in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course in Kahuku, Hawaii.

UNLV's 54-hole total of 10-under 854 tied Duke and was seven shots behind California.

Kevin Penner led the Rebels with a 4-under 212 to tie for fourth, his third top-five performance this season. Blake Biddle tied for eighth at 3-under 213, and Derek Ernst tied for 11th at 2-under 214.

The 18-team tournament was UNLV's fourth top-two finish in five events. UNLV next plays Feb. 25 and 26 in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at Palm Desert, Calif.

■ MEN'S SWIMMING ­-- UNLV won two events to inch closer to leader Wyoming on the third day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, Calif.

Wyoming has 428 points with seven events remaining. Brigham Young is second with 414, and UNLV has 402. The Rebels, who won the last seven Mountain West Conference meets, need a strong final-day showing to maintain their league-title streak.

UNLV's Andrew Morrell won the 100-meter breaststroke by nearly a second, touching the wall in 53.78, an MPSF meet record and an NCAA "B" provisional standard.

The Rebels' other win was in the 200 freestyle relay. UNLV posted a meet record and NCAA "B" time of 1:19.68 to beat Wyoming by more than a second.

■ BASEBALL -- UNLV lost its season opener 4-3 when Loyola Marymount's Joey Boney doubled in the winning run with two outs in the seventh inning in Los Angeles. Boney finished 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

The Rebels led 3-2 before the Lions scored single runs in the sixth and seventh. Trevor Kirk was 2-for-3 for UNLV, which continues the three-game series at 1 p.m. today.

■ WOMEN'S TENNIS -- UNLV, ranked 37th, ended a three-week layoff with a 6-1 win over Utah State at Fertitta Tennis Complex. The Rebels (4-2) host UC Riverside at 10 a.m. Sunday.

■ MEN'S TENNIS -- UNLV suffered a 5-2 loss to Utah at Fertitta Tennis Complex. The 57th-ranked Rebels fell to 3-5 entering a home match against Santa Clara at 10 a.m. Sunday.

■ SOFTBALL -- UNLV (4-3) rebounded from an 8-3 loss to DePaul in its first game of the day to beat Idaho State 7-1 in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium.

Tayler Aleman went 4-for-7 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs. Paige Emerson was 3-for-6 with three runs.

■ CSN BASEBALL -- Dan Jaffe went 2-for-3 with four RBIs to help guide College of Southern Nevada past Okanagan College 13-5 at Morse Stadium.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Coyotes (9-3) scored in every remaining inning to defeat Okanagan (0-2) of Penticton, British Columbia.
