UNLV men’s swimming claims Mountain Pacific championship

The UNLV men’s swimming and diving team rallied to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Saturday, totaling 613 points to edge Wyoming (603.5) and Brigham Young (598) in Monterey Park, Calif.

UNLV clinched the win with a second-place finish in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, swum by Tom Paco-Pedroni, Dillon Virva, Giacomo Gremizzi and Samuel Lameynardie

Balint Batka got the Rebels’ lone win on the final day, taking the 200 butterfly. Lameynardie (100 freestyle) and Gremizzi (200 breaststroke) added second-place efforts.

UNLV coach Jim Reitz was named MPSF Coach of the Year.

■ UNLV WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING — At San Antonio, the Rebels took fourth in the Mountain West Championships, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the meet. Carmen Robb, Katelyne Herrington, Brittany Ozar and Rachel Dixon clocked 3 minutes, 18.74 seconds, in the relay,

Carmen added a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke, and Jessica Heim was third in the 1,650 freestyle. UNLV finished with 444 points. San Diego State won with 734.

■ UNLV BASEBALL — At Stockton, Calif., freshman starter Kenny Oakley led the Rebels to a 4-0 win over Gonzaga.

Oakley allowed just two hits and two walks in seven innings, with seven strikeouts. Scott Tomassetti went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for UNLV (5-3), notching a second-inning sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 and a two-run single in the sixth to give UNLV a 3-0 lead.

Joey Armstrong added an eighth-inning RBI double.

■ UNLV TRACK AND FIELD — At Nampa, Idaho, the Rebels took fifth at the Mountain West Indoor Championships. Emily Blok won the 60- and 200-meter dashes, and Kelsey Williamson won the 400 on the final day as UNLV finished with 66 points. San Diego State won with 123.

■ UNLV MEN’S TENNIS — At Seattle, the Rebels lost to Oregon, 6-1. Ace Matias got the lone win for UNLV (5-3), beating Jeff Mullen 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL — At Cathedral City, Calif., the Rebels lost to Loyola Marymount 4-1 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Tayler Van Acker’s fourth-inning RBI single plated the lone run for UNLV (5-8).

■ CSN BASEBALL — Morgan Stotts’ 11th-inning single scored Chad Whiteaker from second base, lifting the College of Southern Nevada to a 4-3 win over No. 8 Western Nevada College at Burkholder Park.

Cody Clark’s seventh-inning RBI single for the Coyotes (16-5, 4-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference) tied the game at 3.
