UNLV roundup: Men’s golf team tied for third in Georgia

Freshman Jack Trent had five birdies en route to a 4-under-par 68, helping put the UNLV men’s golf team in a four-way tie for third Friday after one round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Trent is tied for sixth, two strokes behind a trio of leaders — Texas’ Doug Ghim, Oklahoma State’s Matthew Wolff and Georgia Tech’s Chris Petefish.

The Rebels are at 6-under 282, five strokes behind top-ranked Oklahoma State and three back of Texas.

Wake Forest, Duke and UCLA are tied with UNLV in a 15-team field that includes five teams ranked among the nation’s top 10 by Golfweek and eight ranked in the top 25.

Senior Shintaro Ban had four birdies and an eagle en route to a 2-under 70 that has him tied with junior Harry Hall for 22nd.

Also for the Rebels, sophomore Justin Kim is tied for 53rd at 2-over 74, and freshman J.J. Gresco is tied for 74th at 5-over 75 in the 78-player field.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

At Logan, Utah, Bailee Hammond scored her second goal of the match in the second minute of the second overtime to lift Utah State to a 2-1 win over UNLV in a Mountain West match.

Michaela Morris scored her ninth goal of the season with 34 seconds left in regulation for the Rebels (12-6, 4-5), who lost their third straight.

Hammond opened the scoring in the 58th minute with her sixth goal of the season, with assists from Ashley Cardozo and Alecia Robinson. Cardozo also assisted on the winning goal.

The Aggies (8-6-3, 3-4-2) held a 15-11 edge in shots, including a 5-0 advantage after regulation.

MEN’S SOCCER

At Colorado Springs, Colo., Danny Han, Tucker Bone and Austin Dewing scored to lead No. 16-ranked Air Force past UNLV 3-0 in a Western Athletic Conference match.

Han opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 19th minute, his second goal of the season. Bone scored his fourth in the 49th minute off assists from John Sims and Luis Martinez.

Dewing capped the scoring with his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.

Andrea Seazzu had five saves for the Falcons (10-1-3, 4-0-2), who are 7-0-3 in their past 10 matches.

Danny Musovski and Timo Mehlich each had two shots on goal for the Rebels (7-8, 4-2), who were outshot 21-13 — including 7-6 in shots on goal.
