5 players to watch in the UNLV-San Jose State game

Five players to watch when UNLV's football team plays San Jose State at 6 p.m. Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium:

1. Tyler Ervin, RB, San Jose State: He leads the Mountain West with 801 yards rushing, and his 160.2-yard average per game is second nationally.

2. Kurt Palandech, QB, UNLV: He gets his first start in place of the injured Blake Decker, and the heat is on Palandech to revive the Rebels' stagnant passing game.

3. San Jose State's starting quarterback: Whether the Spartans go with Kenny Potter or Joe Gray, it doesn't matter much. They are the only Mountain West team to average more than 200 yards per game passing and rushing.

4. Tau Lotulelei, LB, UNLV: The Rebels need to effectively defend the pass, of course, but their priority is to keep Ervin from taking over the game. Lotulelei leads the Rebels with 3½ tackles for loss and is capable of making the needed stops.

5. Christian Tago, LB, San Jose State: He leads the Spartans in tackles (45) and tackles for loss (four), so he will be difficult to keep out of the Rebels' backfield.
