UNLV gets commitment from quarterback for ’09

UNLV didn't make signing a quarterback a priority in this year's recruiting class, but the Rebels landed a QB as their first commitment for next year.

Caleb Herring (6 feet 4 inches, 180 pounds) of Citrus Hill High School in Perris, Calif., has committed to the Rebels.

Herring passed for 2,418 yards and 25 touchdowns as a junior last season, leading Citrus Hill to a 14-0 record and section championship.

In addition to UNLV, Arizona, Arizona State, Fresno State, Oregon and San Diego State reportedly were interested in Herring.

UNLV probably views Herring as a quarterback it can take time to develop. Omar Clayton and Travis Dixon, who will compete for the starting job in August, are sophomores. Another player expected to make an eventual impact, Mike Clausen, is a redshirt freshman.

UNLV signed only one quarterback this year -- Shadow Ridge High's Chris Jones.

Attempts to reach Herring were unsuccessful. NCAA rules do not allow UNLV coach Mike Sanford, who was in Alaska to help conduct a football camp with Rebels wide receivers Casey Flair and Tate Knutson, to comment. Flair and Knutson are from Anchorage.
