Utah cools off San Diego State
SALT LAKE CITY -- Shaun Green had 21 points and 10 rebounds, leading Utah to a 67-55 victory over San Diego State on Wednesday night.
The win gave Utah sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference.
The Utes (17-7, 8-2 Mountain West) gained their fifth straight victory overall and eighth in a row at home. They defeated the Aztecs (17-6, 7-3) for the 25th time in the last 26 meetings at home.
Kyle Spain scored 18 points to lead San Diego State, and Lorrenzo Wade added 15 after sitting out the Aztecs' previous game with the flu.
San Diego State shot only 28 percent in the second half, and the Utes pulled away during the final 10 minutes to snap San Diego State's four-game winning streak.
Luke Nevill added 12 points and Lawrence Borha 11 for the Utes, who made 8 of 9 free throws in the final 2:30.
• New Mexico 76, Air Force 66 -- At Air Force Academy, Colo., Roman Martinez tied his season high with 20 points as the Lobos handed the Falcons their 11th straight loss.
Tony Danridge, coming off a career-best 26-point game against UNLV, added 16 points for the Lobos (16-9, 7-3), who trailed 37-33 at halftime despite scoring the game's first 15 points but benefited by going inside and drawing fouls in the second half.
Matt Holland scored 20 points and Andrew Henke 19 for the Falcons (9-14, 0-10), who are 7-8 at Clune Arena this season after going 68-6 at home over the previous five seasons.
Phillip McDonald added 12 points for the Lobos, who didn't trail over the final 16:49 and held a 23-14 scoring edge on free throws. New Mexico went to the line 36 times, twice as much as the Falcons.
• Brigham Young 94, Colorado State 60 -- At Provo, Utah, Jonathan Tavernari had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the hot-shooting Cougars past the Rams.
BYU (18-5, 6-3) connected on 72 percent of its shots in the opening half, including 7 of 9 from 3-point range.
As a result, the Cougars went on a 25-5 run midway through the first half to push a 15-14 lead to 40-19. Before the half was over, BYU's lead had swelled to as many as 27 points.
Colorado State (8-16, 3-7) was outscored 26-10 in the paint and 12-2 on fast breaks during the decisive first half, which ended 51-27.
The Cougars shot 65 percent for the game to the Rams' 32 percent.
James Anderson scored a career-high 16 points for the Cougars, followed by Jimmer Fredette with 15 and Lee Cummard with 14.
The Rams were led by Marcus Walker and Willis Gardner with 19 and 13 points, respectively.
