Versatile guard keys Magic win

Roberto Nelson is listed as a "combo guard" on the Compton (Calif.) Magic roster.

Nelson showed the Las Vegas Prospects that combo guard means someone who does a lot of everything well.

The Santa Barbara, Calif., senior poured in 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half Wednesday as the Magic downed the Prospects 85-67 in the adidas Super 64 tournament at Rancho High.

Nelson sank four 3-pointers in the second half, ran the floor well, distributed the ball and played solid defense.

And he wasn't alone.

Shannon Sharpe added 15 points, including a thunderous dunk, and 6-foot-9-inch, 250-pound Joe Burton made life in the middle of the lane miserable for the Prospects, who finished 2-1 in pool play.

"That Compton team is good," Prospects coach Anthony Brown said. "They're probably one of the best four teams here."

Mojave senior Anthony Marshall, who had 29 points Wednesday morning in a 75-62 win over the Florida Rams, led the Prospects with 17 points.

"He has really matured," Brown said. "I've watched this kid just get better and better."

Cheyenne senior Demetric Williams added 11 points for the Prospects, who begin bracket play at 3:40 p.m. today at Rancho.

The Prospects' win over Florida was the only victory by a Las Vegas team in the adidas tournament Wednesday.

• REEBOK -- Palo Verde junior Drew Topham led five players in double figures with 15 points as the Triple Double Elite 16-U team finished 3-0 in pool play with a 90-41 rout of Hoop Both (Va.) at Boulder City.

Basic junior Tyler Dobbins added 14 points for the Elite team. Bishop Gorman juniors Anson Winder (12 points) and DeAndre Kambala (10 points) and Durango junior Yada Demisse (11 points) also sparked the Elite squad.

The Elite team is in the High School Division of the tourney and will open bracket play at 6:45 p.m. today at Basic.

• MAIN EVENT -- Eldorado graduate Mitrell Clark scored 18 points to help the Las Vegas Dogcatchers Elite gain a 60-42 win over Nor Cal Force.

The Dogcatchers, a late addition to the tournament, have won their first two pool games and go for a sweep when they face HLC (Wis.) at 9:05 a.m. today at Bonanza.
