Walter Ray Williams Jr. rolled a strike in the final frame Friday to claim his first career United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters title at the South Point Bowling Center.
Needing a strike in the final frame to clinch the crown, Williams delivered in dramatic fashion — carrying a light shot that collapsed the 2-4-5 for a strike to close out his 240-219 victory over Jack Jurek.
“I thought I was going to leave the 2-4-5, and they just kept tumbling over,” said Williams, a USBC Hall of Famer with 47 PBA Tour and eight PBA50 Tour career titles. “To get a strike and win with a hit like that is just crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever done that in a title match.”
Williams, who won $18,000, beat Mike Edwards 237-214 in the semifinal. Edwards defeated defending champion Pete Weber 237-209 to advance and opened the stepladder finals with a 254-184 win over Amleto Monacelli.
