1 dead, 22 injured when Maine hayride flips

MECHANIC FALLS, Maine — Maine state police have identified the 17-year-old killed when a haunted hayride careened out of control down a hill and sent passengers hurtling to the ground.

Police say Cassidy Charette of Oakland died from injuries sustained in Saturday night’s crash. More than 20 people were on board.

A police spokesman says Cassidy was among a group of Messalonskee High School students at the Mechanic Falls farm. Another student — 16-year-old Connor Garland of Belgrade — was seriously injured and is being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Police have identified the driver hauling the flatbed trailer with an SUV as 54-year-old David Brown of South Paris. He remains hospitalized.

A spokesman for the farm where the accident occurred says Brown is an experienced trucker who has a commercial driver’s license.

Police say many of the injured have been treated and released.
