10 of the worst things about winter in Las Vegas
November 19, 2015 - 2:14 pm
With November more than halfway over, the cooler Las Vegas months are on their way. Lows in the valley could reach the 30s by next Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
As so many Las Vegans are used to hotter, or at least more pleasant temperatures, here's a list of the things Las Vegas just can't stand about winter (which, as a reminder, doesn't *technically* start until Dec. 21):
Navigating the valley can get even more annoying
If you thought Interstate 15 was a mess during the warmer months of the year, try driving with a small dusting of snow, or after two months of gray skies when everybody is in a bad mood. More moisture from El Niño could possibly mean more rain, and Las Vegans all know how that works out.
No more outdoor pools
While some of our California neighbors are swimming through their mild winter months outdoors, Las Vegans who don't own one have to find a hotel or local fitness club if they want to take a dip.
10 percent of the clothes you own becomes 100 percent of what you wear for three months
Not too many Las Vegans need their coats, blue jeans and wool socks for most of the year, and they surely don't keep them in deep supply at home. But it's time for the cold-weather gear in the back of your closet to come out again, if there's even anything left from last year. Otherwise, a trip to the mall might be in order.
It's not as much fun to walk the dog
Buster still needs exercise, and someone still has to take him around. You can still walk your dog in the cold, you probably just won't want to. At least your dog probably won't mind.
Ice cream just doesn't seem as appetizing
What are we talking about? Ice cream is always a great idea.
It feels like it's always dark
You have about 10 hours of light starting when you wake up for school or work at 7 a.m.
But if you work a 9-to-5, most of that time is most likely spent inside, so there's little chance to take advantage of daylight over the winter months in Las Vegas.
Your health goes out the window ...
... or, more literally, stays inside. Remember all of the hours you put into exercising outside this summer and eating right so you could feel good? Well, according to a report from NPR, people eat more and exercise less during the winter months. So have some eggnog and pumpkin pie, and worry about the summer when those temps hit in April.
That huge air conditioning bill turns into a huge heating bill
Either way, it's a big bill. Why can't the Las Vegas weather just say in the 70s?
Chapped lips, dry skin and getting shocked every time you touch a door handle
Mix cold with extremely dry, and both you and your skin are in for a nightmare.
Getting sick
This isn't exclusive to Las Vegans in winter, but pair it with the item above and it can feel even worse. Runny noses, colds and even the flu are among common sicknesses when it gets cold in Las Vegas.
