Angle ad uses Reid son to hit Reid father; Reid ad says Angle misleading on Social Security

In a new web ad (below), Sharron Angle is using one of Rory Reid's gubernatorial campaign ads to slam U.S. Sen. Harry Reid for Nevada's dismal economy.

The Reid campaign, for its part, has yet another TV ad (below) questioning Angle's contention she wants to save Social Security.

The tit-for-tat commercials are just the latest in a slew of ads in the Senate race with similar themes. In most, Angle argues it's time for the four-term Reid to go, and the Democratic incumbent argues his Republican opponent has an "extreme" agenda.

In the YouTube ad, a narrator says Rory Reid wants to know "how much lower can we go" in Nevada.

"That’s a good question, Rory," the narrator says of the Democrat who's running far behind his GOP opponent Brian Sandoval.

The ad notes that since Reid became Senate majority leader several years ago, Nevada's jobless rate has jumped from 4 percent to about 14 percent. It also says home values have dropped by half, and 195,000 Nevadans are out of work today "with no sign of things getting better."

"So Nevada, how much lower can we go?" the ads asks. "There’s only one way to find out. Let Rory Reid and his dad, Harry, keep doing more for Nevada this November."

Reid and his campaign argue the economic situation in Nevada and the nation would be much worse if the Democratic Party hadn't pushed for passage of the $787 billion stimulus, industry bailouts and other measures to shore up local governments, homeowners and the unemployed.

Reid's new TV ad takes Angle to task for her evolving statements about her Social Security plans.

During the Republican primary, Angle said she wanted to "phase out" the program and "privatize" it by letting workers open their own accounts.

The Reid ad shows part of a new Angle TV ad in which she says, "I'd like to save Social Security."

"Are you kidding?" asks the Reid ad.

Then the spot plays bits of several TV reporters' commentary on Angle's changing statements.

The ad ends with this line, "Sharron Angle -- views so extreme she can’t tell you the truth."

Angle has always argued for restoring $2.3 trillion to the Social Security Trust Fund that both Democratic and GOP administrations have tapped to pay for other programs. And she has said she would not cut off benefits to seniors and others who already have paid into the system.

But Angle also has shifted her rhetoric when it comes to allowing workers to "opt out" of Social Security and open private accounts instead. Now, she says people should be able to open "personal accounts" that can't be raided by the government. And she says one idea is to administer them like accounts offered to members of Congress and their staffs.

Angle also, most recently, pointed to Chile's retirement system where a majority of workers choose a personal investment system.
