Anniversary medallions available for purchase online

CARSON CITY - Nevada’s official sesquicentennial medallions can now be pre-ordered online, but it may take weeks for delivery.

The one-ounce silver medallions with the state seal and the 150th anniversary logo cost $100.50, while a cooper version runs $15. Medallions purchased before Oct. 25 will be available for pickup or shipment after Nov. 30. Those purchased after Oct. 26 may not be delivered for as long as 10 weeks.

Orders can be placed through the Legislature’s gift shop web site. Once there, put “medallions” in the search engine.

The state plans to have medallions available for purchase at all state museums, but for now, they are available for pick up only at the Nevada State Museum and the Legislative Gift Shop, both in Carson City.

Minting of the silver medallions begins Oct. 25 in the Nevada State Museum, housed in the former Carson City Mint building, on a coin press used as far back as 1868 to create U.S. coins. The copper medallions will be created at the private Northwest Territorial Mint in Dayton.

The Sesquicentennial Commission plans over the next year to authorize the minting of three additional types of medallions. The funds raised from the sales will be used for sesquicentennial events. The state plans at least 150 events as part of the celebration of Nevada’s entry into the union on Oct. 31, 1864.
