Residents are invited to participate in a graffiti cleanup scheduled for Saturday at the Whitney Recreation Center, 5712 Missouri Ave.

Volunteers are set to meet at 9:30 a.m., with the cleanup scheduled to run from 10 a.m.-noon.

Participants will split into groups and remove graffiti from several areas of the neighborhood. Breakfast snacks will be available while supplies last.

LEARN ABOUT HEALTHY HOMES AT LIBRARY

Two free home safety workshops are scheduled for Saturday at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave.

A radon awareness program is scheduled for 2 p.m. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that enters homes from the ground up and can lead to lung cancer.

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plans to give out free home test kits on a first-come, first-served basis at the seminar.

A workshop titled Make Your Home a Healthy Home is set for 4 p.m. Representatives from the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plan to discuss the importance of indoor air quality management.

Red Cross aims to train 1,000 people in CPR on April 23 at Thomas & Mack

The American Red Cross aims to train 1,000 people in CPR in one day during two free sessions, set for April 23 at the Thomas & Mack Center, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

The event, called CPR Saturday, is open to the public. Sessions are set for 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Each session is scheduled to last three hours.

A two-year adult CPR certification will be issued upon successful completion.

Walk-ins are accepted, space permitting.

Gun safety promoted through Police partnership with project childsafe

The Metropolitan Police Department has partnered with Project ChildSafe through the National Shooting Sports Foundation to raise awareness about the safe storage of guns.

As part of this partnership, a limited number of free cable-style gun locks are available to the public at the Convention Center Area Command, 750 Sierra Vista Drive, and the Bolden Area Command, 851 Stella Lake St. The locks are being offered while supplies last.

Henderson Police Department receives reaccreditation

The Henderson Police Department was recently reaccredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, achieving the status for the third time since the initial accreditation in 2002.

The commission made its decision after a team of assessors spent three days in December conducting an on-site review of the Henderson Police Department's policy and procedures, management, operations and support services.

The assessors also conducted a public information session where members of the public were invited to make comments regarding the police department.

The assessment team praised all aspects of the Henderson Police Department and pointed out two of the department's efforts that were especially noteworthy: the department's community policing program and its multifaceted traffic enforcement.

Accreditation is effective for three years.

Safe business practices class to be offered April 28

The Metropolitan Police Department's Northwest Area Command plans to host a Safe Business Partnership class from 1 to 4 p.m. April 28 at its facility, 9850 W. Cheyenne Ave.

The class will be an overview of safe business practices and will include free training materials. Participants will learn how to prevent and respond to crime at their businesses.

The program is free for property managers, store managers and on-site security personnel, but seating is limited, and RSVPs are required.

Firefighters honored by county officials at awards ceremony

Clark County commissioners and county fire department officials were scheduled to recognize firefighters during a ceremony March 29 at Fire Station 33, 865 E. Desert Inn Road.

The awards ceremony was to honor firefighters and a resident who recently went above and beyond the call of duty to save lives.

The scheduled awards and recipients were:

n Citizen Lifesaving Award -- Tim Garcia. A co-worker collapsed in front of Garcia during a business meeting. Garcia administered CPR until firefighters arrived and took over. The patient survived thanks to Garcia's quick action.

n Distinguished Service Award -- Station 12, whose captain is Paul Youdelis, and Station 15, whose captain is Steven Broadwell. The decisive actions of the crews from these stations allowed firefighters to get through heavy smoke in a burning building and enabled them to save a woman who was trapped by smoke and fire.

n Lifesaving Award -- Firefighter Steve De Pue. De Pue was off duty and working in his garage when he heard a neighbor's smoke detector and went to investigate. De Pue found heavy smoke and a fire in the kitchen, which he put out with a fire extinguisher, then helped a woman in the house get outside safely.

n Lifesaving Award -- Firefighter Matt Houchens and Capt. John Borla. Houchens and Borla were off duty and working out at a private gym when another patron collapsed. They used a defibrillator and CPR to save the patient.

Crime Stoppers gets contribution honoring slain cab driver

Crime Stoppers of Nevada recently received a $5,000 boost, courtesy of Frias Transportation Management, in honor of 30-year-old taxi cab driver Tesfaye Arze, who was shot and killed March 4 while on the job. Crime Stoppers and Lamar Advertising were instrumental in assisting the Metropolitan Police Department with the case.

Frias Transportation Management, a private transportation provider, made the contribution to bring attention to the safety issues that face cab drivers and to help Crime Stoppers in its efforts.

The contribution is a prime example of the community partnerships that Crime Stoppers works to develop in order to be an effective tool in assisting law enforcement, said Caroline Ciocca, vice chairwoman of Crime Stoppers of Nevada.
