#BlackOutDay trend celebrates black beauty, fights stereotypes

One of the most-used hashtags on Twitter today is #BlackOutDay, a celebration of black beauty started by a Tumblr user who wants to fight negative stereotypes in media.

A Tumblr user named T’von started the campaign and reached out to YouTube personality Franchesca Ramsey to help promote it.

The campaign asks black people to share photos and other media of themselves to “celebrate coming from all different walks of life,” Ramsey told ABC News.

“Unfortunately, in most popular media talking about black people and our bodies, it’s mostly of us breaking the law, being killed or mistreated,” she said. “So it’s nice to combat these negative images and stereotypes with positive representations of ourselves.”

The hashtag has been used more than 120,000 times in the past day.
