Elderly woman punched, carjacked at Conn. shopping mall

Police responded to the Enfield Square Mall in Connecticut on Monday afternoon after a woman was punched in the face and then carjacked.

At around 2:15 p.m. the woman, who police said was about 73 or 74 years old, was walking out of Macy’s.

She was being followed by a man who reportedly punched her after she got into the car.

“The male interceded and was pointing out that there was something wrong with the tire with the car,” said Enfield Police Chief Carl Sferrazza. “She indicated her husband would take care of it.”

Police said he threw her out of the car and onto the pavement, and witnesses called police.

“I would never expect that around here,” said shopper Luz Marin.

An Enfield officer saw the suspected car, which took off and led police on a chase.

“For that to just happen in an open area like that, that’s just unbelievable. That’s not right,” said shopper Charles Marmon.

The officer tried to pull the suspect over but he just kept driving.

Police said the pursuit ended about four miles later when the suspect crashed into a snow bank in Longmeadow, MA, and tried to flee but was caught by police and taken into custody.

As for the victim, police said she is recovering.

“She did not require hospitalization. She does have some contusions around her head and obviously the physiological trauma,” Sferrazza said.

Police have not released the suspect’s name because they are trying to get an arrest warrant. He will face several charges, including being a fugitive from justice.
