ENTERTAINMENT: Magician takes Trop evening shift

Magician Dirk Arthur bridges the gap between “afternoon” and “evening” headliner by moving his “Xtreme Magic” to 7 p.m. at the Tropicana starting today.
Arthur will still do an afternoon show starting at 4:10 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays. Four-ten? That’s 10 minutes shy of the universal stoner light-up time, so it must be a union thing.
A press release says Arthur has beefed up his show with five new “enormous illusions,” along with new music, choreography and costumes.
It sounds like this puts an end to rumors that Lance Burton would move to the Trop once his Monte Carlo contract expires in June.
But a lot of people are sure to be asking, “They closed the ‘Folies Bergere’ for this?”
Obviously not. The Trop is characterizing the move as an interim deal. Spokeswoman Brittany Markarian says management is "actively seeking" a new evening show after "a deal in principle collapsed at the last minute" for the never-named show that sent the 'Folies' packing at the end of March.
Still, Arthur’s magic is an outside production (helmed by Ari Levin) that doesn’t cost the casino much. “Folies” was the rare show in which the performers were still hotel employees instead of working for a third-party producer.
