Findlay Acura joins fight to defeat serious illness

Findlay Acura is joining the fight to defeat serious illness Wednesday with its Athletes R Us charity golf tournament, presented at Palm Valley Golf Course in Sun City Summerlin.

The tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, along with the Hillary LaVoie Effort.

"Nearly every one of us has been touched, either directly or indirectly, by cancer-related illnesses," said Findlay Acura General Manager James Cobbs. "When we were approached by Athletes R Us to help with the tournament, we gladly jumped on board."

Findlay Acura is helping raise funds by sponsoring three holes on the 18-hole, 6,849-yard, par-72 course, situated in the northwestern valley. Each hole sponsored by the dealership is a par 3.

Each of the three holes is highlighted by special gifts from the Findlay dealership that includes vacations, a brand-new Acura and a set of golf clubs -- all for hitting a hole-in-one.

"The Athletes R Us voice came to me with a proposition to present a golf tournament for the two charities," Kevini Scolari, publicist and spokesperson for the event, said. "I am also running in a marathon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on May 1 in Vancouver, Canada, and so this seemed like a great opportunity to have some fun and raise money for some very worthy causes.

"Athletes R Us is all about getting kids off the streets and into athletics. Kids, who might not ordinarily get the chance to participate in sports, get that opportunity through Athletes R Us."

Scolari added that LaVoie was an amazing athlete who was a much respected cheerleader before a tragic car accident took her life last year.

"Athletes R Us is simply trying to find more Hillary LaVoies in the world in order to help others and give these kids an opportunity. Hillary was a one-of-a-kind person."

Athletes R Us founders and brothers, Pat and Cory Gray, said the help received from Findlay Acura was invaluable.

"We can always count on Findlay Acura's help for every event that Athletes R Us has," said Cory Gray, who, along with Pat, was a football star at Centennial High School. "We cannot do all of this by ourselves and it takes help from people like Findlay Acura to pull this off and help others."
