Go see ‘Obama’s America: 2016’ (and ‘Expendables 2’)

So, I saw two movies over the weekend. One with great action, but no story. The other with a great story, but no action.

"Expendables 2" was in a small theater at Red Rock Station. About three quarters full, almost all 30 and under. After the movie, the kid behind me said: "That's the best movie ev-ah!"

"2016" was in a large theater at Sun Coast. About three quarters full, almost all patrons were 50 and over. After the movie, some guy yelled "Vote him out!"

Both movies received applause at the end.

It's rare that I see any Hollywood movie that commands applause at the end. And here I see two in one weekend.

For those who hope "Obama's America: 2016" might open the eyes of the American electorate, may I simply point out that documentaries like "2016" tend to reach audiences already inclined to buy the premise. It is, as they say, preaching to the choir.

The movie is well done. Captivating, even. And it offers a cogent explanation for the odd behavior of President Barack Obama in his first years of his presidency. We tend to see him as a man coming out of a black American experience. But he's not. He's a man coming out of a colonial black African experience in which the rich and the white and the powerful are the oppressors of the people.

I recommend it. But I'm afraid that recommendation will only go so far. Those who like the president, or those "citizens" who never pay attention, are far more likely to see "Expendables 2."

And that's a shame.
