Mardi Gras Festival: The Lake Las Vegas Master Planned Community and the MonteLago Village Association plan to host the event from noon to 6 p.m. Feb. 13 at 15 Costa di Lago, with parades planned at noon, 2 and 4 p.m., featuring entertainment from bands and guest celebrities from Strip shows; students from White Middle School's Academy of Performing Arts, 1661 Galleria Drive; students and artists from the Positively Arts Foundation, 6935 Aliante Parkway, Suite 104-471; and volunteers from Dignity Health. Strolling musicians, stilt walkers, face painters, a bounce house, bake sales and health awareness booths also are planned. The February session will focus on amending the soil and winter pruning, and the March sessions will focus on fertilizing, mulching, wood chips and watering. Junior Master Gardener: The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension plans to offer the hands-on program for children 7 to 12. The first local class of the eight-session program is set from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 13 at the Lifelong Learning Center's Outdoor Education Center, 8050 Paradise Road. Children will learn about plants, water, soil, vegetables and more. The program also helps foster leadership skills and community service, organizers said. Kickin' it for Cartwheel: The kickball tournament hosted by the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation is planned at 8 a.m. Feb. 20 at the Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 N. Arroyo Grande Blvd. Groups, companies and individuals 15 or older can register teams of between 10 and 12 people to compete, with registration costing $250 and $300, respectively, due by Feb. 15. Teams must have an equal number of men and women. Competitors will receive a Kickin' it for Cartwheel T-shirt, and awards will be given for first, second and third place, with a special award for the most creative team uniform. Rose Garden: Forty-four varieties of roses can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Southern Area Master Gardener's Rose Garden, 8050 Paradise Road. Rose varieties include hybrid teas, floribundas, shrubs, rugosas, damasks, noisettes and miniatures. The beds have engraved signage bearing the names of the roses, the varieties and the year of market introduction. The garden recently received a certificate of achievement in the Small Garden class during the national Sunshine 'n Roses Pacific Southwest District's annual convention. The district spans Southern California, Arizona, parts of Nevada, New Mexico and West Texas. The garden is maintained by Master Gardeners and members of the South Valley Rose Society. Native Milkweed Seed Study: Native rush milkweed seeds are set to be available free from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at the Master Gardener Help Desk inside the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. Those who pick up the packets must take part in a study involving monarch butterflies. The plants encourage the butterflies to lay eggs. Participants will receive instructions, as well as periodic surveys to track seed germination, plant survival and visits by monarch butterflies. Master Gardener Anne Marie Lardeau has been harvesting the seeds from the Demonstration and Test Gardens at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension over the past two years. Black History: The city of Henderson plans to host Heart & Soul: A Celebration of Gospel and Black History from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. The free event will feature gospel musical performances by local church and community groups, including urban contemporary, modern contemporary and Southern traditional.
