HENDERSON OFFERS WORLD’S LARGEST SWIM LESSON

The city of Henderson is preparing for the world’s largest swimming lesson at 8 a.m. June 20.

Henderson is joining the international event that is designated to raise awareness about child safety in and around the water.

The free event is set to take place at the Black Mountain Aquatic Complex, 599 Greenway Road; the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway; and the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.

COUNCILWOMAN TO SPEAK AT CONNECTION MEETING

The city of Henderson is scheduled to host a neighborhood connection meeting at 6 p.m. June 4 at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Henderson City Councilwoman Debra March is slated to answer questions and address various city topics.

She is expected to be joined by city staff members and Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT TO OFFER GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

The city of Henderson is scheduled to host a Parents Night Out from 6 to 8 p.m. June 20 at the Whitney Ranch Indoor Pool, 1575 Galleria Drive.

The event is slated to include pizza, dessert, swimming activities and games.

Children must be able to swim at least one length of the pool comfortably to participate.

The event is open to children 8 to 12 and costs $10.

HENDERSON TO HOST SAFETY FAIR

The city of Henderson plans a Super Summer Safety Fair from 3 to 8 p.m. May 30 at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway.

The event is set to educate residents about child and infant safety around the water.

FOOTHILL HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT PLANNED

Foothill Falcon Basketball is planning its annual summer basketball camp from 9 a.m. to noon June 9-12 in the Foothill High School gym, 800 College Drive, for boys and girls entering third through ninth grade. The $110 registration fee includes a personal evaluation, camp T-shirt, skills instruction and competition. SCHOOLS RECEIVE GRANTS

CenturyLink Inc. has announced 28 Las Vegas-area winners of the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Charitable Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program. The program, which has been offered since 2008, awards grants to schools in CenturyLink’s local service areas on behalf of teachers who have developed plans to implement technology in their classroom.

The winning teachers’ schools each received grants from $500 to $5,000 for purchasing technology for the classroom. The top three grant winners in the valley included:

Givens Elementary School, 655 Park Vista Drive, was awarded $5,000 to purchase iPad Minis equipped with Garage Band, iMovie and iTunes for its Readers’ Theater Radio Show project. The iPads and programs will allow students in music class to learn through the common language of technology. The project was submitted by teacher Orlando Santos.

Sewell Elementary School, 700 E. Lake Mead Drive, in Henderson was awarded $5,000 to purchase Google Chromebooks for its Digital Library initiative, as well as management systems for these computers, allowing students access to a greater volume of information through technology. The project was submitted by teacher Charlotte Severe.

Clark High School, 4291 Pennwood Ave., was awarded $3,500 for Inspiration and Innovation with TI to purchase resources to strengthen its Educate and Inspire Each Student for College and Career Readiness program. The project was submitted by teacher Filomena Vine.

CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC OFFERS CHANCE TO WIN A CAR LEASE

Golfers have the chance to walk away with a free three-year lease of a 2014 Lexus IS 250 sedan at the Driving for Hope charity golf classic, planned for June 10 at DragonRidge Country Club, 552 S. Stephanie St. The 18-hole scramble includes a breakfast and barbecue lunch, awards and prizes and a silent auction. The cost is $175 per player with all proceeds going to HopeLink of Southern Nevada, nonprofit organization with a mission to build a better community by preventing homelessness, keeping families intact and promoting self-sufficiency.

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION OFFERS HERB GROWING CLASS

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Helen Brown is set to teach a one-hour class titled Growing Herbs Inside and Out! at 10 a.m. June 16 at University Medical Center’s Family Resource Center, 1120 Shadow Lane.

MASTER GARDENERS PLAN MONTHLY TOURS

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners plan a guided tours monthly at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. The tours are free and open to the public.

The Demonstration Gardens contain more than 500 species of desert-appropriate landscape plants, including trees, shrubs, perennials, palms, cacti and agaves. Plants are identified by botanical and common names. The grounds are open for self-guided walks from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

To join the monthly tour, meet in the courtyard by 10 a.m. on the specified date. Walking shoes, water, hats or other appropriate items are suggested. Groups (five or more people) are requested to call Ann Edmunds, program coordinator, at 702-257-5587 at least two weeks in advance.
