ADOPTION DISCOUNTS OFFERED FOR VALENTAILS WEEKEND

In celebration of PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend, The Animal Foundation plans to host a Valentails Weekend adoption special Feb. 14-16 at the PetSmart Charities Everyday Adoption Center in Henderson, 286 W. Lake Mead Parkway. Potential pet owners can adopt a dog or cat six months or older for $50 off the adoption fee.

The Everyday Adoption Center is home to more than 40 dogs and cats, and all animals on site have been spayed or neutered. All adopted animals go home current on vaccines with a microchip and an adoption package from PetSmart. Valentails Weekend adoption discounts are available only at the Henderson location. GIBSON LIBRARY HOSTS TAKE YOUR CHILD TO THE LIBRARY DAY ACTIVITIES

The Gibson Library, 100 W. Lake Mead Parkway, hosted 173 participants at its craft buffet offered as part of the national celebration of Take Your Child to the Library Day Feb. 1. Children could choose pieces and parts to art projects such as a bear, ladybug and butterfly.

HENDERSON MAYOR APPOINTED TO NATIONAL COMMITTEE

Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen was recently appointed vice chair of the National League of Cities’ 2014 Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations Steering Committee.

The committee is responsible for developing the organization’s federal positioning on issues involving national economics policy, liability insurance, intergovernmental relations, census, municipal bonds and capital finance.

WARD 1 NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTION MEETING SCHEDULED

The city of Henderson is scheduled to host a Neighborhood Connection meeting for Ward 1 residents at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Heritage Park Senior Facility, 300 S. Racetrack Road.

Henderson City Councilwoman Gerri Schroder is slated to address concerns and answer questions. Other city staff members are scheduled to attend.

Silver Statesmen to deliver singing valentine telegrams The Silver Statesmen Barbershop Chorus plan to offer singing valentines Feb. 14-16. Teams of barbershop quartets hope to fan out over the valley and sing to hundreds of sweethearts. GARDEN CLUB TO TALK TOMATOES

The Sunset Garden Club is scheduled to meet at noon Feb. 11 at the Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway.

The program “Tomatoes, The Passion Fruit,” is slated to be presented by Master Gardener Lori Evans.

REGISTRATION FOR SENIOR GAMES OPENS

Registration for the upcoming Henderson Senior Games is underway.

The event attracts people 50 or older to participate and compete in a variety of sports and games including table tennis, pickleball, basketball, volleyball, bowling and track and field.

Games are scheduled from April 6-27. Due to mass ordering of T-shirts and awards, advance registration will not be accepted after March 14. However, some events may allow walk-on registration. Program registration is $15 per participant, which includes an event T-shirt. Individual events also feature per-event costs of $3 to $5. Volleyball registration is by team with rates starting at $120 per team.

CITY LAUNCHES AED LOAN PROGRAM

The city of Henderson is offering an automated external defibrillator loan program for public use.

The portable device is capable of delivering a shock if needed to restore a heart to its normal rhythm in the event of cardiac arrest.

Henderson launched the program after it was approached by three local mothers who founded Adam’s Heart, an organization that was created after the son of one of the members experienced sudden cardiac arrest during a soccer game.

AEDs are expected to be provided at public gatherings and sporting events at no cost.
