WARD 1 NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTION MEETING SCHEDULED

The city of Henderson is scheduled to host a Neighborhood Connection meeting for Ward 1 residents at 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Heritage Park Senior Facility, 300 S. Racetrack Road.

City Councilwoman Gerri Schroder is slated to address concerns and answer questions. Other city staff members are scheduled to attend.

DOWNEAST OPENS NEW STORE IN HENDERSON

DownEast Home & Clothing opened this month at 9851 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 105, in the Silverado Ranch Plaza.

While the location is the fourth DownEast store in the state and the third in the Las Vegas Valley, it is the first here to carry home furnishings and decor in addition to the company’s clothing lines.

NEVADA NATURALIST OPEN HOUSE SLATED

The Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road, plans to host an open house on the Nevada Naturalist program from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 1. Visit with current Nevada naturalists, meet instructors, see educational project presentations, participate in activities, learn about volunteer opportunities and tour the Outdoor Education Center.

Nevada Naturalist, a University of Nevada Cooperative Extension program, focuses on giving a broad understanding of nature to participants interesting in learning, volunteering, teaching and participating in conservation projects and issues. The program also gives participants the skills and confidence to make a different for environmental stewardship and conservation in Southern Nevada.

NONPROFIT GETS GRANT TO HELP EXPAND LITERACY PROGRAM

Bank of America and The Smith Center recently announced that Spread the Word Nevada was the recipient of the Neighborhood Builders grant.

The nonprofit helps promote early childhood literacy at low-income and at-risk schools.

The $200,000 grant is expected to help the program extend its school-year reading program into summer and offer the program at new schools.

FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST OPEN HOUSE

The Henderson Fire Department is scheduled to host an open houses from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 at all nine stations.

Attendees are expected to learn about fire safety, injury prevention and health and wellness.

Locations include Station 81, 600 College Drive; Station 82, 401 Parkson Road; Station 83, 100 Burkholder Blvd.; Station 94, 400 N. CITY LAUNCHES AED LOAN PROGRAM

The city of Henderson is offering an automated external defibrillator loan program for public use.

The portable device is capable of delivering a shock if needed to restore a heart to its normal rhythm in the event of cardiac arrest.

Henderson launched the program after it was approached by three local mothers who founded Adam’s Heart, an organization that was created after the son of one of the members experienced sudden cardiac arrest during a soccer game.

AEDs are expected to be provided at public gatherings and sporting events at no cost.

PROGRAM INTRODUCES KIDS TO LEGAL SYSTEM

The Legal Minds program offered through the Henderson Municipal Court celebrated its 10th anniversary in January.

Created by Judge Douglas Hedger, the program introduces fifth-graders to life at the court.

More than 5,000 students have visited the program to learn about court proceedings and operations.

PUBLIC EDUCATION FOUNDATION ACCEPTING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

The Public Education Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from high school seniors who plan to continue their education at an accredited college, university or other post-secondary institution.

The foundation expects to award more than 400 scholarships totaling nearly $700,000.

HENDERSON MAYOR ANDY HAFEN APPOINTED TO NATIONAL COMMITTEE

Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen was recently appointed vice chair of the National League of Cities’ 2014 Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations Steering Committee.

The committee is responsible for developing the organization’s federal positioning on issues involving national economics policy, liability insurance, intergovernmental relations, census, municipal bonds and capital finance.
