The Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Educational Campus, Nevada’s only Jewish school offering pre-kindergarten to grade 12, recently celebrated the grand opening of its new $65 million campus in the master-planned community of Summerlin. The campus’s new facilities include an additional 146,000 square feet of educational space that added 34 new classrooms, six science labs and athletic amenities.
According to Tom Warden, senior vice president of community and government relations for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, schools are the heart of the community. “It’s always a red-letter day in Summerlin when our schools have something to celebrate,” he said. “We are exceedingly proud that Summerlin is home to the state’s first and only Jewish school offering pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and we look forward to The Adelson Educational Campus’s continued presence and participation in our community.”
Located on 14-acres in The Hills village, The Adelson Educational Campus consists of three schools: The Milton I. Schwartz Hebrew Academy, which originally opened in Summerlin in 1993 and offers Pre-Kindergarten through grade four; The Adelson Middle School, which offers grades five through eight; and The Adelson Upper School, which offers grades nine though 12. Combined, all schools have an enrollment of nearly 400 students for the 2008-2009 school year.
The Adelson Educational Campus features a research library and technology center; 18 upper school classrooms including three science labs; 16 middle school classrooms including three science labs; 24 lower school classrooms; a 350-seat performing arts theater with instrumental music rooms; studio art facilities — both indoor and outdoor; a sports and fitness center that features an indoor, competition-size pool, an indoor leisure pool with zero-depth entry for younger children, two indoor basketball courts, indoor running track, volleyball court, fencing area, outdoor tennis courts and a soccer field.
“The completion of this project is a dream come true for us,” said Paul Schiffman, head of school for The Adelson Educational Campus. “We now have the best educational, social and recreational amenities to serve our growing student body.”
Summerlin is currently home to a dozen private schools, several of which are affiliated with religious institutions, including Bishop Gorman High School, Faith Lutheran Academy, Faith Lutheran Jr./Sr. High School, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School and Sholom Schechter Day School of Las Vegas.
Non-sectarian private schools in the community include The Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain, Lit’l Scholar Academy, The Meadows School and The Merryhill School.
