Lost man rescued in desert near California border
Nye County sheriff's deputies found a man who was lost in the desert, severely dehydrated and sunburned, after they tracked his cell phone using GPS technology.
Authorities in neighboring Inyo County, Calif., alerted the Sheriff's Office in Nye about the lost man on Wednesday.
A sheriff's dispatcher talked to the man on his cell phone, but "due to his condition he was extremely difficult to understand and often could not respond," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Deputies joined fire and rescue officials in looking for him.
Through the cell phone's GPS, rescue crews were able to track him to the base of the mountains in the Nopah Range Wilderness Area, near the Nevada-California border.
The area is tough to access, but deputies reached him using all-terrain vehicles, the Sheriff's Office said. He was given fluids through an IV and taken to a Pahrump hospital.
