Mailer from mayoral hopeful Ross claims he’ll get Las Vegas working right away

Politicians are known for making statements they can’t back up, and I’m wondering if perhaps mayoral candidate Steve Ross should have thought twice before sending his latest campaign mailer.

To wit:

“Stiff suit politicians just stood there while 50,000 Las Vegans got thrown out of work, and they did nothing to diversify our economy. It’s time for a leader who gets it and who has a plan that’ll fix it. I’m Steve Ross. A working man who’ll put Las Vegas back to work on Day One.”

Those are some fighting words.

But just for the sake of argument, where is Ross hiding all the jobs he’ll produce on “Day One” to get Las Vegas back to work?

And all this time I labored under the delusion that it might take until, say, Day Two or even Day Three to get Las Vegas back to work. Well, live and learn.

Perhaps what Ross means is he’ll propose to diversify the economy, hitch a ride on the high-tech, green energy gravy train that leads from here to the big rock candy mountain of federal funding, and otherwise make city government work better for business.

It’s one thing to be a sincere fighter for blue-collar workers, many of whom have taken a beating in the local recession. I think Ross is a sincere guy.

But at some point the tough talk should add up to something realistic, don’t you think?
