Police in Plymouth, Minnesota, have arrested a man who may have taken his dead mother to the bank to make a withdrawal.
David Vanzo had been investigated previously by county social workers for elderly neglect and financial exploitation of his mother, Caryl, 90.
Caryl Vanzo died early in January.
When police came to the Vanzo home, the stench of urine and feces was ever-present. They found Caryl Vanzo in bed wearing a robe and fur coat. Her boots were covered in feces.
David Vanzo was arrested for elderly neglect.
“My mother and I had an agreement,” David Vanzo told KMSP TV. “I took care of my mom for years. I’m the good guy here, not the bad guy.”
David Vanzo took his mother by taxi to the bank about seven hours before he reported her dead and made a withdrawal in her name.
Bank employees said Caryl Vanzo’s feet were dragging under her wheelchair. Some said she “did not move” and employees “couldn’t tell if she was breathing,” KMSP TV reported.
Police said Hennepin County Adult Protection Services made an in-home visit in 2012 and found Caryl Vanzo lucid and able-bodied.
Authorities have twice investigated David Vanzo for financial exploitation. There was a reverse mortgage of $118,000 that his mother couldn’t explain and cash withdrawals of about $73,000.
