Mom has baby on the side of I-15 in Utah

It was a speedy delivery this weekend on Interstate 15 near Ogden, Utah, when a baby boy was born on the side of the road.

“My water broke in the fast lane, doing 75!” Devi Mariah Ostler, 32, of Mantua, Utah, told 2News Sunday from her hospital room in Brigham City.

She says it all started after she dropped her older son off at his grandma’s house in North Ogden and then tried to drive herself, while in labor, to the hospital, but her little guy just wouldn’t wait.

“I thought I would make it, until my water broke,” Ostler said.

Her lightning speed labor can be heard in the 911 call she placed at 8:38 Saturday night from the freeway.

“I thought it was somebody calling in a traffic problem, or a reckless driver,” dispatcher Brittney Chugg said of the call at first but then commented on how quickly things escalate, “We obviously needed to get somebody to her quick.”

She put out the call and within minutes Willard City Police Chief Jean Loveland arrived on the scene.

“It was quite an experience,” Loveland said of the ordeal, “She was laying back in the front seat of her car, with the steering wheel here and the console here.”

And all too close to the cars speeding along the freeway.

“She was actually just in the emergency lane, so I could feel the wind of the vehicle blowin’ by!” Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Josh Carr told 2News.

A trained EMT, Carr arrived on the scene just in time to catch the baby.

“He came right out in my hands … right there,” he said.

A healthy 9-pound-8-ounce boy was born without any complications.

Ostler joked about how quickly and smoothly her labor and delivery took place.

“I am grateful I have easy labors — I really am — even if it’s on the side of the road!” she said.
