Mountain’s Edge to host Start! Heart Walk and Run event Oct. 16
October 8, 2010 - 11:00 pm
Cardiovascular diseases and stroke are the nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers and Nevada's No. 3 and No. 4 killers. They claim more than 870,000 American lives each year, including 5,000 Nevadans.
To combat this deadly killer, the American Heart Association is inviting people in Southern Nevada and across the country to take a stand against heart disease by joining its Start! Heart Walk and Run Oct. 16. The 5K race and companion walking route will be held at Exploration Park at the Mountain's Edge master-planned community in southwestern Las Vegas at Buffalo Drive and Blue Diamond Road.
This year's event is designed to encourage participants to take steps toward building a stronger, healthier life for themselves and their communities while raising funds for research. More than 5,000 Las Vegas residents are expected to walk or run with family, friends, co-workers and survivors of heart disease and stroke.
On day of the event, registration begins at 7 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. and the race and walk at 8:30 a.m. Activities beginning at 9:30 a.m. include a free Kids Zone, free health screenings, entertainment, food and promotions and giveaways by Mountain's Edge builders.
Last year, local participants raised more than $200,000. The 2010 goal is $350,000. For information or participation, visit lasvegasheartwalk.org or call 367-1366.
Research funded by the American Heart Association has contributed to innovations, such as CPR, pacemakers, bypass surgery, heart-lung machine, surgical techniques to repair heart defects and life-extending drugs like clot-busters.
Start! Heart Walk and Run is nationally sponsored by Subway restaurants. In Las Vegas, sponsors include Pfizer, NV Energy, Mountain's Edge, Medco, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nevada, Freeman, Nevada State Bank, Healthcare Partners of Nevada, Cricket Wireless, International Game Technology, Freeman, the University of Phoenix, Boyd Gaming Corporation, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, CBS Radio, City National Bank, Good Sheppard Rehabilitation and Word and Brown.
