MOVIES: Mark your calendars for Aug. 21 ‘Avatar Day’
July 30, 2009 - 2:59 pm
"Titanic" director James Cameron still thinks he's king of the world.
After all, his new sci-fi opus, "Avatar," doesn't open in theaters until Dec. 18 — but Cameron, and his pals at 20th Century Fox have decreed Aug. 21 shall be "Avatar Day."
That's the date "Avatar's" trailer debuts — and the date select multiplexes and IMAX theaters will screen extended footage, prepared by Cameron himself, to whip up excitement for the movie. This extended "Avatar" preview will be shown only on Aug. 21 — and only in 3-D. (Details on locations and reserving tickets will be announced soon ... and blogged accordingly.
Aug. 21 also is the day Mattel will reveal action figures from the movie — and Ubisoft (is "Ubi" short for ubiquitous?) unveils the trailer for the "Avatar" video game.
With only a few hype-heavy releases ("G.I. Joe," "Inglorious Basterds") still on the release calendar this summer, the "Avatar" trailer may rank as the most anticipated footage remaining to be seen this summer ... at least for the future-shock fans. (And you know who you are.)
