Navajo child misses first day of kindergarten over long hair
September 6, 2014 - 10:54 pm
A west Texas kindergartner was sent home from his first day of school this year because his hair was too long.
The Seminole Independent School District said administrators were simply following procedure and allowed 5-year-old Malachi Wilson to return to school once his parents provided documentation that he was a member of the Navajo Nation.
According to Wilson’s mother, April, it’s against their religion to cut his hair, which is seen as sacred. April Wilson told CBS 7 in Odessa that her son has returned to school, but he’ll never get back his first day of kindergarten.
She said she’s looking at hiring a lawyer to look into a discrimination suit against the school district.
