St. Baldrick’s raises more than $464,500 for childhood cancer research

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation raises money for childhood cancer research with head-shaving events in Las Vegas and Henderson. So far in 2011, eight events have been held, raising more than $464,500, with donations still coming.

Participants stand in solidarity with the more than 160,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year, who typically lose their hair during cancer treatments, and raise awareness and money for vital research.

The first St. Baldrick’s event in Las Vegas took place in 2007. Since then, more than $1.4 million has been raised.

Mothers pampering planned

A Mother’s Day Pamper Party is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4 leaving from Parkdale Community Center at 3200 Ferndale St. Mothers are invited to take the special trip, which includes lunch and a selection of salon services.

The participation fee is $9 in cash for lunch and $6 cash for spa services.

Entertainment retrospective planned

UNLV Senior Adult Theater is set to present “Entertainment Through the Ages” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Cora Coleman Senior Center, 2100 Bonnie Lane. The one-hour variety show of monologues, scenes, songs and dance is free, but registration is required.

SENIOR PICKLE BALL SCHEDULED

Pickle ball play is scheduled from
12:30 to 2:30 p.m. today at the Paradise Recreation Center, 4775 S. McLeod Drive. The game is a combination of lawn tennis, badminton and tennis.

Participation is for seniors 50 or older and is free, but players must sign up for a free Cactus Room membership card.

Blackjacks prepare for rugby match

The Las Vegas Blackjacks rugby team is set to play Huntington Beach at 1 p.m. Saturday at Silvestri Junior High School, 1055 E. Silverado Ranch Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.

Hunter Jumper show planned

Ballet La Grana to perform
in World Steps series at Winchester

Ballet La Grana is scheduled to perform folk dances of Concheros, Yaquis, Nayaritas, Huapangueros, Jarochos, Jaliscienses and Colimenses from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S.
