Nevada progressives: Tax profits, fund services

Bob Fulkerson isn't waiting for newly elected Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval to deliver a state of the state address, he's doing his own instead.
Fulkerson, state director of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, recorded and posted an address online that describes what he says is a compassionate and forward-looking vision for Nevada.
Fulkerson, a longtime progressive activist, disagrees with Sandoval's adherence to a pledge not to increase any taxes during his term as governor.
He and other progressives think the state has cut education and other services too much already, to the detriment of quality of life and the economy.
In the 4:27 address, Fulkerson urges Sandoval to consider increasing taxes on gold mining, companies that make more than $500,000 annually in profits and on luxury services.
"The worst thing a state can do is cut back on higher education and weaken the public services that a strong economy needs," Fulkerson said. Later adding, "These changes will not kill business but they will ensure extremely profitable businesses pay their fair share."
