COMMUNITY MEETING PLANNED REGARDING EMINENT DOMAIN

A community meeting for concerned homeowners is planned at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Aliante Library, 2400 Deer Springs Road. Attorney Scott Knight, lenders, real estate brokers and other professionals are set to attend. City Council members and Mayor John Lee have been invited.

All who attend the panel will be providing information and taking questions on concerns regarding the impact on property values, protecting assets, eminent domain and the impact on the city as a whole in advance of the city adopting the Mortgage Resolution Partners program.

AUDITIONS PLANNED FOR CSN PRODUCTIONS

The College of Southern Nevada Department of Fine Arts is seeking actors for its three fall productions.

All auditions are set for 7 p.m. in the BackStage Theatre, room 1201, at the Cheyenne campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., and will consist of cold readings from the scripts. A photo and resume are preferred but not required.

Auditions for the One Act Workshop are scheduled for Sept. 3. Amateur or experienced students and community members are invited to participate. Seven short plays are to be performed Oct. 4-6, under the direction of CSN professor Mindy Woodhead. Auditions for Dennis Bush’s “Below the Belt” and all-female auditions for Clare Boothe Luce’s “The Women” are planned for Sept. 10 and 11. “Below the Belt” is to be directed by Jane Walsh and staged one weekend at each CSN campus, Oct. 4-19. “The Women” is to be directed by Rhonda Carlson and staged Nov. 8-17.

CIVIL AIR PATROL TO MEET

The Nellis Senior Squadron of the Nevada Wing Civil Air Patrol meets 7 to 8 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of each month in the Grand Canyon Room at the North Las Vegas Air Terminal, 2730 Airport Drive. IMMUNIZATION PUSH UNDERWAY

The Southern Nevada Health District offers extended hours and special Saturday shot clinics in August in preparation for the first day of school Aug. 26. The district has not scheduled a special clinic in North Las Vegas but encourages parents to contact the North Las Vegas Public Health Center, 955 W. Craig Road, Suite 103D, to schedule an immunization before the end of the month. Officials at the center can be reached 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 702-649-3736. All Nevada schoolchildren must be immunized. Vaccine costs vary based on the type of immunization required. The health district charges an additional administrative fee of $16 per child for one vaccine and $25 per child for two or more vaccines.

PEARSON CENTER HOSTS WALKING CLUB

The Pearson Community Center in North Las Vegas plans its Positive Movement walking club at 6 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at 1625 W. Carey Ave. Participants aim to encourage each other physically, emotionally and spiritually by walking on the track.

NEVADA SCHOOL OF DANCE TO HOST AUDITIONS FOR ‘THE NUTCRACKER’

The Nevada School of Dance plans to host free auditions for “The Nutcracker” from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at 6072 S. Durango Drive.

Children 5 to 10 with or without ballet experience may try out, and preteen and teen male and female dancers with ballet experience may audition for such roles as Mouse King, Nutcracker Prince, snowflakes, dolls, Spanish dancers and the Waltz of the Flowers. Adults are welcome to audition for the party parents.

10-DIGIT DIALING EXPLAINED

A new website, dial10digits.org, has been created to explain the start of 10-digit telephone dialing in Clark County and the formation of the 725 area code.

Aug. 3 was scheduled to mark the beginning of a nine-month transition period to allow Clark County residents to adapt gradually to 10-digit dialing before he mandatory 10-digit dialing deadline takes effect on May 3, 2014, and the 725 area code debuts on June 3, 2014.

MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY DONATIONS SOUGHT

All Southern Nevada Heartland Jiffy Lube locations will sell Muscle Up coupon savings books between Aug. 1 and Sept. 2 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Through Labor Day, visit any participating Heartland Jiffy Lube location and donate $3 to MDA and receive a savings book worth more than $100 in savings from Jiffy Lube and other MDA supporters. CANNERY THEATRES SCHEDULED
FOR LUXURY UPGRADE

A planned face-lift at Galaxy Cannery Theatres, 2121 E. Craig Road, looks to make North Las Vegas home to the second Luxury+ brand theater location in the Las Vegas Valley.

The theater will remain open to the public during the changeover, as only a few auditoriums will be converted at a time. The transformation, which started July 22, is expected to be completed in December.

Southern Nevada Strong is inviting the community to attend open houses to gather resident input.

The organization is a regional planning initiative looking to improve transportation, housing and job opportunities in Southern Nevada.

NLVPD SEEKS SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS

The North Las Vegas Police Department is looking for school crossing guards to work near various elementary schools during the upcoming school year. The position is part-time and pays $9 an hour. Crossing guards typically work from 6:30 to
9:15 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. weekdays, depending on school assignment.

BLM COLLECTING ENTRIES THROUGH SEPTEMBER FOR PHOTO CONTEST

The Bureau of Land Management is celebrating Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, by seeking photos that highlight residents’ adventures and activities on public lands and historic sites. Winning photos will be featured in the BLM Nevada 2014 planner and on the BLM Nevada web and social media sites and could appear on BLM’s national social media sites.

Photos will be selected from the following categories: Adventure & Outdoor Recreation; Historical & Cultural; Scenic, Seasons & Landscapes; and Animals. Photos must have been taken between Jan. 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2013. Contest entries will be accepted up to Sept. 30. Winners are to be announced Oct. 31.

In addition to the photo contest, the BLM will also be producing a children’s activity book, developing 150 themed geocaches and highlighting the BLM’s role in the state’s history.

HELP of Southern Nevada is launching its $10 on the 10th recurring donor program, which encourages Southern Nevada residents to help make a difference in their community by donating $10 on the 10th of every month.

BANK OF AMERICA INITIATIVE PLANNED
TO BENEFIT VETERANS SUPPORT GROUPS

Bank of America has announced a fundraising initiative called Express Your Thanks to benefit veterans of the Wounded Warrior Project and Welcome Back Veterans, an initiative of Major League Baseball Charities.

The project’s goal is to raise $1 million for these charities. Running through Veterans Day (Nov. 11), anyone can participate by taking a photo, creating a video or writing a message of support and sharing it on bankofamerica.com/troopthanks. They also can post on Twitter with the hashtag #troopthanks. For every message posted, Bank of America will donate $1 to Wounded Warriors and Welcome Back Veterans.

SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN OPEN OFFERS FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open offers the opportunity for local charities and schools to raise funds for their programs by selling daily ticket vouchers to the 2013 tournament, scheduled for Oct. 14-20 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle.

By selling tickets to the annual PGA tournament through the Tickets for Charity and Tickets for Schools programs, organizations retain 100 percent of the proceeds. Participating organizations can include parent-teacher associations, sports clubs, academic clubs and local nonprofits.

Last year’s program raised more than $30,000 to support more than 30 local nonprofits in addition to assisting more than 25 school systems to defeat budget cuts. Merryhill School’s parent-teacher organization led the participating schools last year in raising $2,700 for their programs. Additionally, the International Public Safety Leadership & Ethics Institute sold more than 300 tickets to the tournament to raise $3,220.

HELP OF SOUTHERN NEVADA LAUNCHES BOTTLED WATER PROGRAM FOR HOMELESS

HELP of Southern Nevada invites the community to be part of its HELP2O campaign, which donates bottled water to the homeless.

Patrons can donate water at any Las Vegas-area Whole Foods Market through Aug. 31. For every bottle of Real Water brand purchased at Whole Foods Market during the campaign, the Nevada-based Real Water company will donate a bottle of Real Water.

Collection points for donated water include: Whole Foods Fort Apache, 8855 W. Charleston Blvd.; Whole Foods Tenaya, 7250 W. Lake Mead Blvd.; Whole Foods Town Square, 6689 Las Vegas Blvd. South; and Whole Foods Henderson, 100 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Bottled water donations can be purchased in-store and donated or purchased elsewhere and dropped off. The water will be collected on a regular basis and distributed to area homeless.

Additionally, monetary donations can be made with HELP of Southern Nevada change jars at all four Whole Foods Market locations or by submitting a donation through the nonprofit’s website at helpsonv.org.

Face the World Foundation is registering volunteer host families for the fall semester of high school. Host families provide a loving home, meals and a bed while learning firsthand about another culture and establishing friendships that will last a lifetime.
