ON THE BOULEVARD: Tears of joy at Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’

Steven Spielberg’s War Horse" is easily one of the best movies of the year. Its trouble come awards time, I imagine, will be in finding judges willing to give the big trophies to the majestic four-legged animals who are the real stars of the movie.
While at a recent showing of the film at the Santa Fe, I noticed something I haven’t experienced in many years: a film that brought a wide variety of audience members to joyful tears. It was something to hear and see as the audience of mostly adults expressed emotion not only over the intense scenes from the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest fights of World War I, but also of the struggle of the beloved thoroughbred Joey as he moves between the lines and eventually back home at last. An Oscar for Joey? Why not?
