A Salem, Oregon, man found covered in blood had decapitated his mother’s cat, according to deputies.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4600 block of Shawnee Lane early Thursday morning after neighbors called 911.
They reported to police that 24-year-old Rudi Espinoza had knocked on their door, wearing only boxers and covered in blood.
Witnesses told deputies that Espinoza was acing “very strange” and appeared to be under the influence.
Espinoza was taken into custody without incident. At that time, deputies noticed he was also covered in scratches and bite marks.
During the ensuing investigation, a cat was found decapitated inside a home with its tail broken. A probable cause affidavit states Espinoza used a kitchen knife.
When asked why he killed his mother’s cat, Espinoza stated, “because it is evil and nosy,” according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
According to court documents, family members believe he did it to cause his mother pain.
Espinoza was arraigned in court Thursday on charges of aggravated animal abuse. His bail was set at $100,000.
Espinoza is due back in court July 7. Court records show he has no prior criminal history.
