Our political Justice Department

If you are one of the few remaining fans of Eric Holder’s Justice Department, it must be getting hard to say with a straight face that America’s top law enforcement agency isn’t engaging in political prosecutions.

The latest sketchy endeavor came when the Justice Department indicted former Republican Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell and his wife. The charge?

Receiving gifts and loans from businessman Jonnie R. Williams Sr., whose commercial dietary supplements were promoted by the governor. Really?

Here’s the gigantic problem.

A: Based on what we know now, this kind of behavior is legal in Virginia and most states.

B: This kind of political backscratching is done by Republicans and Democrats in every state in the nation. There’s not a U.S. Senator in the land who couldn’t be charged by the Justice Department using the McDonnell criteria.

President Obama, Bush and Clinton would be potential targets of this Justice Department’s reading of the law.

But something tells me Eric Holder would only prosecute Bush.
