Out of control elevator climbs 31 floors in 15 seconds

What’s worse than a free-falling elevator?

Perhaps a possessed elevator that climbs at near warp speed.

Okay, so it may not have been traveling that fast, nor was it possessed, but an elevator malfunctioned on Friday in a building in Bustamante Park, Chile, and covered 31 floors in 15 seconds, getting up to nearly 50 mph.

And there was someone on board.

In the video you can see 31-year-old José Vergara Acevedo go into complete panic mode and start hitting all the buttons to hopefully stop the elevator.

His efforts instead open the elevator doors, revealing just how fast the elevator was moving.

The elevator eventually stopped when it slammed into the roof. According to Emole Chile, Vergara had to be extricated by firefighters and was taken to the hospital with head and leg injuries.
