Police: Woman said body left on sofa was ‘shrine from God’

A Phoenix woman who claimed a body on her sofa was "a shrine from God" faces a first-degree premeditated murder charge.

Anitra Braxton, 39, was arrested Saturday after officers found the body of a woman, possibly pregnant, covered with a towel at Braxton's apartment in Phoenix.

Braxton initially told police she lived alone and no one was inside her home.

After officers discovered the body, Braxton was arrested and interviewed.

She told police detectives the victim on the sofa was "a shrine from God and actually her own body," according to the arresting officer's report. She then stated the victim had been shot in the eye for "not believing in her God."

Braxton said the body had been there for two or three days.

Police said based on evidence, "it was apparent that the scene had been partially cleaned up."

Officers said the identity of the victim was unknown. According to the suspect's family members, Braxton suffers from mental illness issues. The case is still under investigation.
