Salted Malted serves up new take on savory and sweet
A new bakery and creamery has opened in North Las Vegas with a special spot for Canadians and those who dabble in the art of snacking.
Poutine (gravy and cheese curds served atop french fries), breakfast sandwiches, designer cookies, artisan ice cream, store-made miniature doughnuts and milkshakes are just a few of the items that one can find at Salted Malted, 6584 N. Decatur Blvd., in North Las Vegas near the 215 Beltway.
Homespun-style treats and eats are the centerpieces of the bakery, which gets most of its inspiration from Canadian classics.
Those with a sweet tooth can find Dole soft-serves ($2 to $4), which feature rotating flavors of pineapple, orange, raspberry, strawberry and mango. The vegan treat was originally available only at Disneyland but can now be found at Salted Malted inside the Crossroads Towne Center for less than half the price.
Ice cream sandwiches feature fresh baked cookies ($2.25), and the menu also has malts and shakes ($2.75 to $5.25) and ice cream sundaes ($4.75 to $5.75) made with homemade whipped cream and a cherry.
On a recent visit, Churro cookies, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip cookies, Oatmeal Raisin, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Gingerbread Men cookies and The Chipster cookie, made with chocolate chips and topped with a single potato chip, were available. Cookies (60 cents each and 80 cents for specialty kinds) are soft but still include a slight crunch.
Miniature doughnuts include classic (three for $1.29) and specialty (three for $1.89).
On the savory side of the menu are regular fries and poutine ($3.75 to $4.75), a long-loved French-Canadian food staple served in diners, casual eateries, food trucks and fine dining establishments. The medium-cut fries are topped with cheese curds and gravy, and customers can add peameal bacon for an extra $2.
Breakfast sandwiches are served all day and include the Canuck ($4), a traditional Canadian bacon sandwich stacked on a roll, and the Canadian Sunrise ($4.50), which is the Canuck with a fried egg and cheese.
Beverages include coffee, hot chocolate, soda, ice tea and slushies. Energy drinks, apple juice, bottled waters and milks are also available.
The bakery is owned by Leonard and Cait Messina. Cait is a Canadian native.
Leonard's son, Damien Messina, is the consulting chef at Salted Malted. He also is the executive chef at The Head of the Bay Club in Huntington, N.Y.
