WASHINGTON — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has been nominated to become the next vice chairman of the National Governors Association, a position that will put the Silver State Republican in line to take over the association's top spot in 2017.
Sandoval's nomination for the vice chairmanship is scheduled to be acted on in July at the organization's annual summer meeting in Iowa.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, now serves as vice chairman and will succeed Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican, as chairman during the summer meeting.
Sandoval will step into the No. 2 post at that time and take over as chairman after McAuliffe's year-long term in 2017.
In the middle of his second term as governor, Sandoval's one-year term as the governors association chairman will end in the summer of 2018.
He currently serves on the organization's executive committee.
The governors association emphasizes its bipartisanship. According to its website, the organization speaks with a collective voice on national policy and develops innovative solutions to improve state government and support the principles of federalism.
