SHREDDING EVENT PLANNED TO BENEFIT OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE
Team Emanuele with Golden Real Estate & Investment LLC is set to sponsor nonprofit Opportunity Village's Shred-A-Thon event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 8335 W. Flamingo Road. CALVARY CHAPEL 5K RUN PLANNED
Calvary Chapel Spring Valley's Couch to 5K program is set for Saturday with the Running With the Lions 5K. The event, which serves as the finale for a churchwide fitness program, is also a fundraiser for Calvary Chapel Christian School. The run will begin and end at the Clavary Chapel Christian School athletic field, 7175 W. Oquendo Road, and medals will be awarded to best overall finishers, as well as the first three winners in age and gender categories. Runners and walkers of all levels and ages are invited to participate in either the 5K or untimed one-mile fun walk. Proceeds from the run will benefit the athletic and academic programs of Calvary Chapel Christian School, a nondenominational Christian church.
Following the race, an expo and vendor fair featuring live music, children's activities, smoothies from Tropical Smoothie, haircuts and neck massages from Sport Clips, food trucks and raffle prizes are planned. DEVIL PUPS LEADERSHIP MEETING PLANNED
An informational meeting for prospective Devil Pups and their parents is planned at noon Saturday at the Leatherneck Club, 4360 W. Spring Mountain Road.
The Devil Pups program trains teens 14 to 17 on Saturday mornings in preparation for a 10-day leadership and physical fitness training program at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in California. Only a handful of the teens nationwide pass the rigorous tests for entrance to the camp.

BASS PRO SHOPS PLANS KIDS EVENT
Kids are invited to join the Bass Pro Shops Kids' Challenge from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 3333 Blue Diamond Road.
The event offers challenges, such as bucket fishing, archery, life jacket races, knot-tying and a sleeping bag rolling competition.
Younger children's free activities are planned, such as braided snake and arrow head crafts, plus a chance to win fun prizes, from 1 to 4 p.m. both days while supplies last.

REPUBLICAN WOMEN TO MEET AT SPIEDINI RISTORANTE
The Spring Mountain Republican Women plan to host a monthly meeting and luncheon at 11 a.m. April 26 at Spiedini Ristorante inside the JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. The guest speaker will be Mark Hutchison, a candidate for Nevada Senate District 6.

SOLAR ECLIPSE TO BE TOPIC AT STAR PARTY EVENT APRIL 28
An Astronomy in the Park Star Party is planned for 6 p.m. April 28 at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area's group use area.
The evening is set to begin with views of the moon and Jupiter just after sunset, followed by deep-sky viewing of galaxies, nebulae and star clusters as the sky darkens.
The presentation will be "Understanding Eclipses," as the club prepares to observe the annular solar eclipse coming up May 20.
A laser-guided tour of the night sky is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The free event is sponsored by the Las Vegas Astronomical Society. Parking and access to video-assisted viewing of the night sky is available for those in wheelchairs.

GIRLS DAY PLANNED AT BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
Girls Day, a fundraising event of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, is planned for 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 19 at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell Road. FOUNDATION SET TO HOST BALL TO SUPPORT BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED KIDS

TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION NEEDS INPUT FROM RESIDENTS
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is continuing to hold community outreach events and public hearings until May 17 to discuss the transit fare adjustments proposed by the Fare Working Group to address fiscal challenges. A 60-day public comment period is in effect to obtain community input about the fare recommendations before any decisions are made. The recommendations include modifications to transit fares for the residential market, resort corridor and ADA Paratransit service.
The public is encouraged to attend upcoming public outreach sessions to learn more about the fare proposals: 4 to 6 p.m. May 1 at Albertsons, 4850 W. Craig Road; 5 to 7 p.m. May 4 at Albertsons, 2575 S. Maryland Parkway; and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 9 at the Centennial Hills Transit Center, 7313 Grand Montecito Parkway.
In addition, the transportation commission plans to host two public hearings on the proposals: 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bonneville Transit Center, 101 E. Bonneville Ave.; and 3 to 5 p.m. May 12 at the Bonneville Transit Center, 101 E. Bonneville Ave.

ANNUAL LANDSCAPE CONTEST TAKING APPLICATIONS THROUGH MAY 7
Applications for the Southern Nevada Water Authority's 14th annual Landscape Awards competition are being taken through May 7.
The awards honor residential and professional water-efficient landscapes that are both attractive and functional in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Laughlin and unincorporated Clark County. Winners will be announced at a special breakfast ceremony in June.

GRANT WILL HELP STOCK FOOD PANTRY
Helping Hands of Vegas Valley has received a $10,000 grant from health care provider CareMore. The grant will help fund HHOVV's low-income qualified food pantry, which serves an average of 355 clients monthly.
Helping Hands of Vegas Valley is a nonprofit organization that provides assistive services to senior citizens in Southern Nevada, allowing them to maintain their dignity and independence while improving daily living.

SHOES BEING COLLECTED FOR TORNADO VICTIMS
Desert Birkenstock and Soles4Souls are working to provide victims of tornado-ravaged areas with something many lost: shoes. Bring gently worn shoes to Birkenstock stores, and they will be delivered to the local Soles4Souls warehouse near McCarran International Airport.
