4. Vegas Valley Book Festival: The 2015 festival is set for Oct. 15-17 in downtown Las Vegas and at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. The largest annual literary event in Nevada, the festival brings together a wide variety of literary genres and cultural programs, with most events taking place Oct. 17 at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St. More than 120 authors and 50 events are planned, including panel discussions, keynote speakers, readings, book signings, workshops, vendor exhibits, art exhibitions, spoken word performances and other special programs for a diversity of genres, ages and cultural backgrounds. All events are free and open to the public. Keynote speakers will be Brad Meltzer, author of "The Inner Circle," "Book of Fate" and "The President's Shadow," and Colum McCann, author of six novels and two story collections and the recipient of the National Book Award for "Let the Great World Spin." Pick up party: The Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort is set to host its their annual Winter Season Pass Pick Up Party from 4 to 9 p.m. Oct. 21 at Aces & Ales, 2801 N. Tenaya Way. It's scheduled for the third Friday of each month to provide a supportive and friendly environment for writers to develop their writing skills in prose and poetry. Deacon's Fall Family Explorer Event: The event is planned from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 17 at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 8601 Del Webb Blvd. Dr. Paul Meacham, former president of the College of Southern Nevada, who was himself a Buffalo Soldier, will talk about the history of the Buffalo Soldiers and will have his horse outside the church for the children to experience after the talk. "Breathe Onto the Mirror": The exhibit by Jacqueline Ehlis is planned to run through Nov. 8 at The Studio at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Ehlis is the chairwoman of the art department at Portland Community College, and her work incorporates the interaction of color, light and reflection, reminding the viewer that they are the vehicle that interprets and is part of the works through their reflection in the mirrors. Oakey Blvd. The last week of October, the attraction is set to be open from 5:30 to 9 p.m. nightly. Nov. 1 is set to feature a Day of the Dead theme. Attractions include a zombie quarantine area, the No Hope Hospital, the Zombie Clown Circus, haunted trails and a haunted train ride. Magician Dixie Dooley is set to perform nightly.
