Summerlin celebrates ‘ghoulish’ fun
October 31, 2009 - 9:00 pm
The Gardens Park in the master-planned community of Summerlin was transformed into one of the valley's pumpkin patches Oct. 10 for the third annual Summerlin Pumpkin Festival.
The event featured a pumpkin patch, hay maze, petting zoo, bounce house, costume parade and games. The Las Vegas Farmers Market was also on hand selling home-grown and homemade items, including fresh produce, flowers, corn on the cob and barbecue.
The event was planned exclusively for Summerlin residents by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association that oversees social, cultural, educational and recreational events for residents.
According to Lezlie Barnson-DeNardin, director of community relations for The Summerlin Council, holiday events are always popular with the community's many young families.
"Hundreds of little ones dressed in Halloween costumes were running around the park, enjoying the sights and activities of the fall season," Barnson-DeNardin said.
"It's a very visual and well-attended annual event."
The Summerlin Council coordinates several annual events for residents, including seasonal celebrations, such as the Summerlin Pumpkin Festival. Other seasonal celebrations include Egg Hunt, The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade and Hometown Holidays.
Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., an affiliate of General Growth Properties Inc., Summerlin began to take shape in 1990.
The community is currently home to more than 98,000 residents.
Amenities offered in the master-planned community include more than 150 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 25 public and private schools and 75 actively selling floor plans.
Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the upper $100,000s to more than $2 million. Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the $900s.
