Summerlin offers houses of worship
Thousands of Summerlin residents will celebrate the holiday season this year with family and friends at one of Summerlin's 14 houses of worship. The chapels and temples provide sanctuary, add architectural beauty to the community and serve as gathering places for a variety of religious, cultural and social events and activities.
"We're proud of the religious diversity that exists in our community," said Kevin Orrock, president of Summerlin. "Our 14 worship sites stand as hallmarks of faith and tradition to our residents who value the opportunity to worship close to home."
Summerlin's first church opened in 1993 -- two years after the first family moved into the community.
During the last decade, nine worship centers opened in Summerlin, including The Hindu Temple and Cultural Center -- Hindu Society of America, Las Vegas' first Hindu Temple, which opened in 2001.
According to Orrock, additional houses of worship will open in Summerlin as development continues.
Holy Spirit Catholic Church has acquired a 5-acre parcel adjacent to Bishop Gorman High School in The Mesa village to accommodate its 900-member congregation. Currently worshipers are meeting at Bishop Gorman High School until the facility is built.
"Holy Spirit Catholic Church will be a welcome community amenity to residents in the southern portion of Summerlin who are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to worship in their own neighborhood," Orrock said.
Existing houses of worship in Summerlin include two facilities for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Desert Spring United Methodist Church, Faith Community Lutheran Church, Grace in the Desert Episcopal Church, Hindu Temple and Cultural Center -- Hindu Society of Nevada, Mountain View Presbyterian, St. Andrew Lutheran, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Summerlin Community Baptist Church, The Summerlin Evangelical Lutheran Church (Wisconsin synod), Sun City Community Church, Temple Sinai and Temple Beth Sholom -- conservative Judaism.
