Summerlin to celebrate National Trails Day today

In honor of National Trails Day today, The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, invites valley residents of all ages to spend a portion of their day walking, running, cycling or skating on the 150-mile, nationally acclaimed Summerlin trail system.

The trails, which consistently rank as the No. 1 amenity in Summerlin resident surveys, connects neighborhoods to parks, schools, office and retail centers. The connectivity and expansiveness of the trail system earned The Howard Hughes Corp. the inaugural American Trails Developer Award in 2009.

"Summerlin trails provide affordable exercise and recreational opportunities in the community while encouraging social interaction with neighbors," said Julie Cleaver, vice president of design and planning for The Howard Hughes Corp. "Residents of all ages benefit from recreational activity and socialization."

Other benefits of community trail systems include increased property values, safe/alternate modes of transportation and an enhanced awareness of and appreciation for the environment.

The system is not limited in use to only Summerlin residents.

"There are hundreds of non-Summerlin residents who commute to the community to enjoy the community's hallmark trails," Cleaver said. "There isn't another trail system like it in Southern Nevada, which is why so many organized running and cycling clubs meet in Summerlin. But we have noticed many of those commuting trail users eventually buy a home in Summerlin and become residents. There is nothing better for an outdoor enthusiast than having a 150-mile trail system that connects to your front doorstep."
