MOUNTAINVIEW HOSPITAL OPENS FIRST PHASE OF $70 MILLION EXPANSION

MountainView Hospital, 3100 N. Tenaya Way, has opened the first phase of its multi-phase tower expansion, increasing the bed count from 253 to 291. Upon completion of all construction phases, the total count will be 339 beds.

The tower, at just under 85,000 square feet, is opening in two phases. The first was scheduled to occur Jan. 7 and included a new emergency room with 23 private evaluation rooms. A dedicated ER entrance and new waiting area are also open. The first phase also includes a new 12-bed intensive care unit on the first floor and 32 new private medical surgical patient suites on the second floor. Additionally, there is a new helipad.

The second phase will include renovations to the original ER. When complete and joined with the recent ER opening, it will almost double the size to 42 exam rooms. The third floor will be built out with an additional 32 private medical surgical patient suites and is expected to open this summer.

The new tower construction costs about $70 million.

An additional $15 million in construction and renovations include an expansion of the inpatient rehabilitation unit on the sixth floor of the hospital's medical office building, as well as renovations to existing medical surgical rooms in the hospital's central tower. The lobby, admitting/registration and cafeteria will also be renovated and are scheduled to be complete by summer.

STROLLER STRIDES OPENS AT TIVOLI VILLAGE

A workout program for mothers with young children is slated from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at Stroller Strides at Tivoli Village, 302 S. Rampart Blvd.

Stroller Strides is a 60-minute total body workout that moms can do with their babies. Taught by certified fitness instructors with specialty training for the pre- and post-natal woman, it is a workout for any fitness level. It includes power walking/jogging and intervals of body toning exercises using resistance tubing, mom's stroller and the environment.

Stroller Strides instructors weave songs and activities into the routine designed to engage and entertain baby.

COMPUTER CLUB TO MEET JAN. 26 AT TOTAL WINE & MORE IN BOCA PARK

The Clark County Commodore Computer Club (aka the 5Cs) plans to host its monthly meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 26 at Total Wine & More in Boca Park, 730 S. Rampart Blvd. The club plans to demonstrate the VICE Commodore 64 emulator for Windows and discuss new technologies displayed at CES. Attendees will receive the Jan. 13 5C's newsletter disk on a 5¼-inch floppy disk in Commodore 64 format.

The group of Commodore Computers enthusiasts meets the fourth Saturday of each month.

MOUNTAINVIEW HOSPITAL TO HOST SESSION ON BARIATRIC SURGERY

Free bariatric (weight loss) surgery education programs are planned in the coming weeks at MountainView Hospital, 3100 N. Tenaya Way.

The sessions are scheduled for the first-floor classroom at 6 p.m. Jan. 23, 10 a.m. Feb. 9, 6 p.m. Feb. 27, 10 a.m. March 9, 6 p.m. March 27, 10 a.m. April 13 and 6 p.m. April 24.

Though the sessions are free, attendees can learn such things as bariatric surgery options, who is an appropriate candidate for surgery and what is involved in the surgery and recovery process.

PUBLIC TELESCOPE CLINIC PLANNED AT RED ROCK CANYON

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society plans to host a public telescope clinic at 2 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.

The event is set to begin with solar observing through special white light and hydrogen-alpha-filtered telescopes to see sunspots on the surface and solar prominences around the sun's edge. LVAS members will also provide assistance for those who need help using new or dusty telescopes.

A beginning astronomy presentation is planned at 4:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center. Viewing of the night sky will immediately follow the presentation, and a laser-guided tour of the night sky is set for 6:30 p.m. Visitors need to be in the park before the gates close at 5 p.m.

SAHARA WEST LIBRARY TO HOST GENEALOGY SERIES

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada plans to present Exploring Your Family's History: Genealogy Series from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Three lectures are set to be covered by speaker Steven Morse. The scheduled topic for the first lecture is One-Step Webpages: A Potpourri of Genealogical Search Tools. The second lecture is slated to cover One-Step Webpages: A Hodgepodge of Lesser-Known Gems. The third is planned to be From DNA to Genetic Genealogy: Everything You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask.

Morse is best-known as the architect of the Intel 8086 (the grandfather of today's Pentium processor), which sparked the PC revolution 30 years ago, and is the creator of the award-winning One-Step website.

ROHR JEWISH LEARNING INSTITUTE PLANS FOUR-WEEK COURSE

The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute plans to begin the its new six-session winter course Living with Integrity: Navigating Everyday Ethical Dilemmas Sunday.

Rabbi Tzvi Bronchtain of the Chabad of Southern Nevada is slated to conduct the sessions in Summerlin and Green Valley. The Chabad of Summerlin, 2640 Regatta Drive, plans to host the course from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays Jan. 23 through March 13.

Packed with real-life scenarios, Living with Integrity invites students to articulate their own opinions, while providing practical Talmudic wisdom to help them navigate through life's ethical challenges. Living with Integrity is a Continuing Legal Education-accredited course.

All courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple or other house of worship.

INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL TRADE SERIES COMING TO THE SUNCOAST

The Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce and the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development are set to kick off the 2013 INSIGHT International Trade Series from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday in Ballroom C at the Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive.

The event will include seminars designed to create learning and networking opportunities for businesses currently involved in international trade or that are interested in expanding global market opportunities. A luncheon and update on the State of Nevada's plans for economic development in the global economy by Steve Hill, director of the Governor's Office of Economic Development, is set for 11:30 a.m.

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION, ROSE SOCIETY PLAN EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the South Valley Rose Society are collaborating to offer two educational meetings.

Larry Kaplan, SVRS yearbook editor, is scheduled to present Good Bugs, Bad Bugs at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road. Participants can find out what insects are beneficial to roses, how to attract them, where to buy them, what insects cause problems and how a gardener can get rid of them using organic or inorganic products.

Lyn Vinson, consulting rosarian, plans to present Photographing Roses 101 at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Lifelong Learning Center.

Learn the basics and how to get started taking pictures for your own pleasure or for exhibiting. She will cover what kind of camera to use, any special equipment needed and what roses photograph best.

LOCAL BUSINESSES INVITED TO MEET YOUR CUSTOMER DAY EVENT

Purchasing analysts and other staff members from numerous Clark County departments are scheduled to meet with local business representatives at the Meet Your Customer Day event planned from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 23 at the Clark County Government Center rotunda, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

Local minority-owned, female-owned, small, physically challenged, veteran and disabled veteran business enterprises interested in supplying Clark County's business needs will have a chance to meet various representatives of Clark County departments and purchasing analysts in partnership with agencies including: the Nevada Small Business Development Center's Business Success Center; SCORE Counselors to American's Small Business-Southern Nevada Chapter; the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada; the State of Nevada, the Governor's Office of Economic Development; Akers and Associates Inc.; the Foundation for Independent Tomorrow (FIT); University Medical Center; and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE GETS $16,000 DONATION

WestStar Credit Union has donated $16,000 o Opportunity Village as the culmination of its 2012 charity campaign: A Mile of Smiles. In August 2012, WestStar Credit Union set out on a mission to collect a mile's worth of smiles with the intention of donating $1 for every smile collected to Opportunity Village.

Over the past several months, WestStar sent teams of volunteer employees out to different local venues, including Fremont Street, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; local malls, Las Vegas Wranglers hockey games, the Great Santa Run and even the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village to capture pictures of people's smiles. Their efforts were partnered with local Las Vegans who uploaded their own smile pictures to the gallery at amileofsmiles.org.

YMCA OFFERING DISCOUNT ON NEW MEMBERSHIPS
