BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP TO MEET WEDNESDAY AT TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM

A bereavement support group plans to meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the social hall of Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane. Meetings are usually scheduled on alternating Wednesdays to help widows and widowers understand the process of grieving and prepare for lifestyle changes. For more information, call 702-804-1333.

MOUNTAINVIEW TO HOST BARIATRIC SURGERY INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS

Free bariatric (weight loss) surgery education programs are planned in the first-floor classroom at MountainView Hospital, 3100 N. Tenaya Way, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. Feb. 9, 6 p.m. Feb. 27, 10 a.m. March 9, 6 p.m. March 27, 10 a.m. April 13 and 6 p.m. April 24.

Sessions are free, and attendees will learn bariatric surgery options, who is an appropriate candidate for surgery and what is involved in the surgery and recovery process. Registration is required. To sign up, call 702-233-5300.

PUBLIC TELESCOPE CLINIC PLANNED SATURDAY

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society plans to host a public telescope clinic at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area Visitor Center, 1000 Scenic Loop Drive.

The event is set to begin with solar observing through special white light and hydrogen-alpha-filtered telescopes to see sunspots on the sun's surface and solar prominences around the sun's edge. LVAS members will also provide assistance for those who need help using new or dusty telescopes.

A beginning astronomy presentation is planned at 4:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center. Viewing of the night sky will immediately follow the presentation, and a laser-guided tour of the night sky is set for 6:30 p.m. Visitors need to be in the park before the gates close at 5 p.m.

NEVADA BALLET THEATRE TO HOST BLACK & WHITE BALL SATURDAY

The Nevada Ballet Theatre plans to host its 2013 Black & White Ball Saturday at the Bellagio, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd. South. The event will honor legendary dancer, singer and actress Mitzi Gaynor.

SAHARA WEST LIBRARY TO OFFER TAROT LESSONS STARTING FEB. 2

Beginning tarot lessons are scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 2, 9 and 16 at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Bring your own tarot cards. Card sets will also be available for purchase. Each subsequent class will build off information covered in the previous class, so plan to attend all three.

AARP TAX PREPARATION TO BE AVAILABLE STARTING FEB. 4

AARP plans to prepare tax returns for free by appointment from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 4 through April 8 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 7 through April 11.

TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION COALITION PLANS FREE WORKSHOPS

The Southern Nevada Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition plans to host a series of free workshops for parents and guardians interested in developing skills to effectively talk to their pre-teen and teen children about sexual relationships, preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

The first workshop is scheduled from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Walnut-Cecile Community Center, 3075 Walnut Road. More workshops are planned targeting parents and guardians in ZIP codes identified as high risk, including: 89119, 89115, 89030, 89106, 89101, 89102 and 89109. According to the Nevada State Health Division, in 2008, youths living in these ZIP codes represented 23 percent of teen births in Clark County.
